ENTRE-PRISES ... The UK’s largest purpose built
Climbing Boulder.
Entre-Prises have recently completed the construction of the UK’s largest purpose built climbing boulder at Whickham Thorns Park in Gateshead. The development of the Boulder Park , set in adventure woodland in which orienteering and a range of cycle activities are augmented, is the centre-piece of their expansion plans.
The brief for the Boulder Park was multi-faceted. It had to appeal to novices and competition climbers alike, it had to replicate the features and texture ofthe local crags, and it had to work as a piece of sculpture that would appeal to the non-climbing eye. Sited on the edge of the A1 the Boulder Park has to compete with its neighbour the ‘Angel of the North’ as a striking monument.
The Boulder Park was officially opened by the Mayor of Gateshead on 31st October ( 1998. Alan H inkes was im m ediately »
drawn in to give his ‘official’ seal of approval and N eil Carson, the 1997 British Climbing Champion, spent the day setting routes and battling with problems.
