mountain biking in Wales post-graduation. With Graduation just around the corner on 3 May 19, the course are looking forward to gaining their Wings in the very near future!
BFJT 272
The start of 2019 has seen 272 Course continue to progress slowly but surely, with many of the course finishing BHT and eagerly awaiting night flying at the end of March and a Nav Det to Leuchars in April. February also saw the “emotional” departure of our illustrious Course Commander Flt Lt George Hobday and his fellow skimmy Flt Lt Louis McQuade, who left us to cash in their “Golden Ticket” at 100 Sqn. We wish them all the best for AFJT and extend a warm welcome to our new Course Commander Flt Lt George Blundell-Pound.
We thoroughly enjoyed our basic nav phase however the planning was never without its many challenges and hiccups. Fg Off James McNiff used about half a rainforest’s worth of maps due to routinely planning turning points such as a slight bend in what can only be described as a dirt track, much to Flt Lt Kallmeier’s anger. After deciding to use a “bigger” road his next plan involved boldly going completely against the flow arrow at the M6 pass, a faux pas we very much enjoyed pointing out. Flt Lt Harry Neve swiftly decided to follow suit, with all of his plans somehow bonging every single NOTAM in both Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. Meanwhile, our naval aviator was very surprised to find himself in a dogfight with a microlight at low level despite planning to fly right past a microlight airfield!
Shieldsy is currently in pole position on the course DASOR leaderboard with a tally of 5. He assures us most of them are not his fault but that of an aging airframe but of course we’re reluctant to believe him.
Our Course Leader and First Sea Lord-in- waiting SLt James French currently owes us several crates of beer after deciding to abandon the course for several weeks in order to compete at the Inter-services Ski Champs in France, even bagging himself some interviews on Forces TV. We wouldn’t have minded the lack of leadership had he actually won all of his races, however he assures us the experience was worth it due to being able to “network” with some of the senior naval officers of the Fleet Air Arm. In completely unrelated news he is now receiving physio for sore knees.
On the social front, many of the course recently attended the Burns night dinner. Our enthusiastic ceilidh dancing was a significant improvement to our usual moves on the revolving dancefloor of Popworld. Bambi also delivered an outstanding rendition of Tam O’Shanter before being carried home at the end of the night by his wife.
BFJT 273
Warm welcome to the Linton Link from BFJT 273! We joined the station in back in October, most of the course assembled at
RAF Wittering in August ready to start their journey as steely eyed fast jet heroes. Quickly it became apparent that for Flying Officers Tobi McCrone, Arran Broad, Hadi Arran, Sub Lieutenant Ben Gallagher and 2nd Lieutenant
