  TOWER TALK
Fg Off Gunn
It has been a busy six months for Air Traffic, with a number of arrivals and departures from the Squadron
Sgt Eccles has moved to RAF Shawbury as an instructor, SAC Arkle and Robson have moved to new postings at RAF Fylingdales and Boulmer to work in the space and air defence environments, and Sgt Wilkes has moved to pastures greener in the civilian air traffic world. Flt Lt Magee and FS Homer have been enjoying the Falklands summer sun while Sgt Tortoishell is getting some actual sun in Cyprus. Flt Lt Magee will be moving to RAF Valley on his return.
The Sqn has welcomed Flt Lt Cribb from Boscombe-Down and FS Syrett from Leeming, both experienced controllers. Fg Off Gunn has joined as a HAAC (Holding Aircrew Aerodrome Controller) VCR-only controller, soon to be accompanied by Fg Off Davies. LACs Wraith and Smith have taken up the mantle as assistants, with SAC Wilkes returning from Minad and Cpl Willis has joined us from Recruit Training Sqn at RAF Halton, where he was responsible for inspiring and motivating Phase 1 recruits.
In November the Sqn undertook two AT trips to the Lake District. Not to be put off
by chilly water and confused looks from the locals, both groups jumped, swam and fell down a river, with more than one person tackling their fear of heights. The groups also tackled mountain biking in Winlatter Forest and would like to thank Flt Lt Davis and Sgt Graham from the Stn Gym for helping to facilitate this.
Flt Lt Tricklebank, Fg Off Adams and SAC Whiteley were able to participate in the RAF Ski Champs in January, at the Saalbach- Hinterglemm resort in Austria. Through tuition and training, the Ski Champs facilitate the transition from recreational to competitive skiing and provide an opportunity for personal development through challenging activity. The trip was also an excellent chance to soak up some of the Austrian culture including a performance from David Hasslehoff!
The Sqn has made good contributions towards the charity MNDA (Motor Neurone Disease Association), having raised just over £500 so far through dress-down days and a very successful quiz night held in the Sergeants’ and Warrant Officers’ Mess. There
are more events upcoming to push our total even higher!
In December an Honours and Awards Ceremony was held in the Officers’ Mess, to recognise the outstanding contribution members of the ATC family have made to the service:
• Mr Jones and Mr Medlicott – Stn Cdr’s Commendation on behalf of Phoenix BCU
• Flt Lt Rhodes – Long Service Good Conduct 2nd Class
• Flt Lt Tricklebank – Long Service Good Conduct
• Sgt Eccles – Stn Cdr’s Commendation
• Cpl Burns – Stn Cdr’s Commendation
• Cpl Jones – Stn Cdr’s Commendation
• SAC Eagle – Stn Cdr’s Commendation
• SAC Gibson – 83 EAG Commendation The Sqn is busy continuing to facilitate the 1FTS and 6FTS flying output from the Stn and is prepared for the challenges that lie ahead following the Tucano OSD. Hopefully the worst of the year’s weather is now behind us and we have a good summer of flying ahead!
