universities of Yorkshire. While some students relished being a ‘top gun’ at the respective fresher’s fair, this allowed us to engage with students directly, and filter for interview days. Following a week of tough interviews, we were delighted to welcome the newest members of 50 course from November onwards.
In November, Yorkshire were honoured to be the leading military contingent to march in the town of Tadcaster, close to our old home base RAF Church Fenton. For all squadron members, first year or final year, this was an extremely proud moment, but also an important time to remember, particularly on the 100th anniversary of the First World War Armistice.
The recruitment process culminated with our induction camp at the beginning of December. As new Off Cdts wound down their university studies they made their way to Linton for the 8-day exercise. This encompassed station welcome briefs, basic weapons training from the 6FTS regiment staff and then we deployed to the Lake District for 3 days of adventurous training. It was here that the new course really got to know each other outside the formality of a military environment. This exercise closed with the station Christmas Draw. This allowed 50 Cse to experience their first Officers’ Mess event, and it was the perfect way to close their first military exercise. Yorkshire would like to thank the station for enabling us to host exercises such as these, and for the variety of personnel who welcomed the new Off Cdts to station life.
Throughout this busy period, Yorkshire continued to occupy the circuit with a number of student solos. Congratulations to Off Cdts Tidswell, Tart, Heaton, Henry-Campbell, Bird,
Mckernan, Newman, Campbell and APO Nuttall for all your hard work in achieving this amazing feat. (Disclaimer - apologies to ATC if you’ve heard some unorthodox comms over the past few months!). Congratulations also goes to APO Bird and Off Cdt Milliner on achieving their Preliminary Flying Badges in the summer months.
Finally, throughout February, half of the squadron deployed over 4 weeks to Austria for our annual skiing expedition. This provides Officer Cadets with an opportunity to gain their Ski Foundation 1, whether they are a beginner who has never worn a pair of skis before or a seasoned skier. Students had an epic few weeks on the mountains, although some are reconsidering their career choice after seeing the YUAS GTI spend 4 weeks skiing as an instructor, when they had to go home to the grind of university seminars!
Before we go, we’ll mention a little bit about what we’ve got coming up in the next few
months. As I write, YUAS are working away planning to celebrate ‘Tommy’s birthday’ i.e the 50th anniversary of the formation of Yorkshire UAS, with a hangar party in the diary for August 2019. Now we’ve all got over the skiing blues, the excitement of our annual dinner is just around the corner and I’m sure by the time you read this we will all be prepping our blues and setting our alarm clocks for our yearly Easter Camp...
Until next time.
