LUCTON SCHOOL CCF
We have had an exceptionally busy year with at least two events every Term. We have maintained our numbers, consistently being just over our establishment with the pupils continuing to take advantage of what the CCF has to offer.
This year’s training started off with a leadership cadre run by our ever-resourceful SSI WO2 Rich Brown. The training that was delivered covered the main principles of leadership and the importance of not only the Army’s values and standards but the school’s as well.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s award continues to be popular, with record numbers passing, and this year saw our Cadets taking part in a number of very challenging and in, some cases, very hot expeditions over the Long Mynd and the local area around the school. Congratulations to the following Cadets who have been awarded their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards; Reubens Coleman, Harri Lloyd, Gian-Andrea Wildhaber, Amelia-Sky Stevens and staff member Megan Griffiths.
Year 10 cadets, and some specially selected Year 8’s, have all successfully passed their St Johns’ Ambulance youth first aid certificate. Cdt Georgia Oertel recently won an award
for her actions that saved the foot of a motorcyclist who was involved in a collision. The contingent first aid team also performed exceptionally well, winning the best CCF at the Brigade competition, coming 3rd in the Nationals and representing the CCF in the Tri service Competition.
Both Speech Day and the school’s Jubilee celebrations took place just before Annual Camp and the Contingent supplied a Colour Party for both as well as for the school’s Remembrance.
Parade. Awards were presented, with Best Recruit going to Josh Brown and the Vernon Pitt Trophy for Best Cadet being awarded to Cadet Warrant Officer Amelia Sky Stevens.
Summer Camp this year took place
at Nesscliffe, with 19 Cadets and 5 staff
from the Contingent enduring a 27-degree heatwave. Training included fieldcraft and a comprehensive range package. On the final morning the cadets stopped off in Shrewsbury to visit the Soldiers of Shropshire Museum where the Cadets and staff were treated to an excellent and informative guided tour by the museum’s Director, Richard Gough.
At the end of camp, we said a sad goodbye to some of our departing senior Cadets including Cpl Tiffany Williams and L/Cpl Yara Johnson. The following morning the cadets and staff enjoyed a fantastic day in the Black Mountains testing their nerve on the high ropes course and learning new skills on the water in canoes. The contingent has also carried out a very well received battle camp on Sennybridge Training Area which included recce patrols, night ambushes and an advance to contact exercise.
We received excellent support from our parent Brigade, HQ West Midlands Brigade, and from the Cadet Training Team represented by Sgt Al Welsh. The Contingent would also like to thank Mr David Bicker-Caarten, the Head of Lucton School, and the Governors for their continued support. We have once again had a very successful year and we continue to promote real pride in the RIFLES badge that the Cadets proudly wear.
