Centennial Year
Lt Col L Valler RADC
RADC100 Committee Chairman
By the time you read this the Corps will have begun its Centennial Year. The COVID-19 pandemic means that the Corps ends these 100 years at a time when performing clinical dentistry is hugely challenging for everyone involved. However, performing dentistry to the highest standards in difficult conditions and locations is something that the Corps has undertaken frequently throughout these 100 years. The British Dental Journal’s upcoming ‘RADC- themed issue’ tells the stories of some of these occasions along with academic articles and a retrospective cohort analysis, all showing where the Corps has contributed to oral health both within the military environment and to the wider dental profession. All the articles are written by serving and retired RADC individuals so keep an eye out for this early in 2021 and many thanks go to all those who have contributed.
More visual displays of these stories can be seen at the Museum of Military Medicine’s temporary exhibition that is on display at several military museums across the UK during 2021. The dates and locations can be found at the website http://www.radc- association.co.uk
The main events of the RADC100 year are mentioned at the end of my narrative. Unfortunately, COVID-19 is likely to impact to some degree, so an enthusiastic and flexible approach, as per our history, will ensure a successful year.
Included in the year are several social events (for serving and retired persons), Adventure Training, the unveiling of the Centenary stone at the NMA and placing of poppies at ADC and RADC graves (see separate article from Maj (Ret’d) Gibbs).
The success of the Centenary year will depend on ensuring as many people who have been involved with the Corps’ history are aware of the plans for 2021 so they can attend the events listed below. So, if you are in contact with anyone who might wish to attend any of the events then please pass on the details.
