Paying Our Respects
Maj (Ret’d) N Gibbs
In 2021 the RADC will celebrate the centenary of its formation and it would be appropriate to pay our respects to 98 of our colleagues who died in service to their country. They are commemorated
in Commonwealth War Graves in the
UK and across the globe. Of these 14 are remembered on memorials, as their bodies could not be identified. All the sites are impeccably looked after by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and are very moving places to visit and their website can be searched for more information, www.cwgc.com
Approximately half the graves are in the UK, mostly in the South East of England where many injured soldiers from European theatres of war were treated, those that succumbed to their injuries are buried
near where they died. As World War 2 encompassed the whole globe there are Army Dental Corps graves and memorials
all around the world from Europe to China (Hong Kong), Egypt, Gaza, Greece, India, Iraq, Japan, Myanmar, Pakistan, Thailand, Tunisia and Singapore. Some of those that died were very young like 18 year-old Private
Milton Guibarra in Rangoon, Myanmar, while some were much older like the 57 year-old Lieutenant Alexander Ward.
During our centenary it would be amazing to pay our respects to as many of our
fallen colleagues as possible. The RADC Association has offered to donate a British Legion Poppy Cross for every ADC or RADC gravesite in the UK. If you wish to lay a poppy cross then please contact Major (ret’d) Gibbs at radc100thgraves@gmail. com who will send one to you. Should you have any connections to any of those listed it would be fascinating to find out more and the email address above can be used. A map of the UK locations with lists of the UK and world sites are below.
As part of the September 2021 Corps Event it would be fantastic to have photos of as many of the graves and those who paid their respects as possible. At the gravesite please take a simple photo of the grave, ideally with a poppy cross in front of it and,
if you want, a photo of those who paid their respects at an appropriate place.
N.B. It would be remiss not to mention that prior to the formation of the Army Dental

Corps, many dentists either volunteered or were conscripted during World War 1. 25
of them died, mostly in Flanders Fields and Northern France, and are commemorated in Wimpole Street. I have included their names and places of rest should personnel wish to pay their respects.
