RAF Wyton Running
Club
By AS1 Zoe Mayo
RAF Wyton Running Club has been well established on base for several years now. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic the club had become dormant over the last couple of years due to the restrictions. Now on the other side of Covid, the club is slowly getting back to full swing!
In the last eight months the club has been frequently competing in off-road cross- country style races at a range of locations such as RAF Cranwell, Digby, Coningsby and Waddington. The races predominately are on a monthly basis, but this can vary from club to club. All the races are completely friendly and open to all abilities, whether you are a beginner – an ultra-marathoner. The friendly nature of these races gives all runners the
opportunity to race at different locations, conditions and distances with a wide range of competition to make all feel welcomed and included. All races are open to tri-services and civilians to get involved with!
If this sounds like this might be of interest to you then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with either AS1 Louis Gillow (Louis. Gillow100@mod.gov.uk) or AS1 Zoe Mayo (zoe.mayo101@mod.gov.uk).
If you would like to be added to our distribution list to get updates on all things running, training and races then please get in touch!
   RAF Wyton Polytunnel
By Major Howard Alcock
Following a visit to RAF Wittering by the Station Commander and the Station Quartermaster where they saw the polytunnel set up, it was proposed that Wyton should consider the option of having one. A small team was drawn together by the QM to discuss the options and costings and it was agreed that an application should be made to the RAF Local Initiative Grant and the Armed Forces Covenant Trust Fund for the purchase.
The polytunnel is a shared resource for the Whole Force and has several raised beds within it that can be ‘hired out’ (for a small charge) on an annual basis by station personnel to grow fruit, vegetables and flowers. It is hoped that those with ‘green fingers’ will be able to pass on their support, knowledge and encouragement to others that want to learn more about the benefits of growing your own food.
The polytunnel (which is 30ft by 102 ft,
high sided and commercial grade) has now been installed. It is situated at the back of the Costcutter shop between the car park and the fence.
Now the polytunnel has been delivered, constructed and fitted, a ‘polytunnel club’ will be set up and a small committee will be formed to manage the allocation of beds and to purchase equipment. Applicants for beds can approach Major Howard Alcock on x 6688 for more information.
