98 CASR
The QDG team at this year’s CASR
consisted of the CO, Capt Clark, and Sgt
Simms. On paper, it was the most expe-
rienced crew we had sent to the regatta
in years, raising hopes of bringing home
some silverware.
Capt Clark confidently assured the CO
that the sun always shone on Seaview
Yacht Club, advising against wet-weather
gear: “A linen shirt and swim shorts will
suffice.” However, unlike previous years,
the weather proved more challenging.
Strong winds of up to 25 knots combined
with spring tides made for choppier
conditions in the Solent, delivering three
days of thrilling but soggy sailing.
The QDG team secured two first-place
finishes on the regatta’s opening day,
boosting their confidence to compete
strongly against an experienced fleet.
Their toughest competition came from a
team representing Army HQ.
By the end of the event, the QDG team
achieved the title of Best Regimental
Team for the first time since Maj David
Hoey skippered in 2019. Capt Clark was
also recognized with the trophy for Best
Skipper Under 27.

Squash
Despite the numerous commit-
ments undertaken by 1st The Queen’s
Dragoon Guards, the regimental
squash team has managed to build on
the successes from previous years and
has continued to excel on court.
The team’s dedication came to
fruition whilst competing in the annual
2024 Royal Armoured Corps (RAC)
Squash Championship; not only did
1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards claim
their second consecutive victory in this
highly contested event (gaining the
maximum points to contribute to the
Hodson’s Horse competition), half of
the team were selected to represent the
RAC for the Army Inter Corps Cham-
pionships and beyond. During the
closing ceremony, the Team Captain
Cpl Newbold was presented with the
2024 RAC Championship Most Improved
Player – strange way to receive an
award, what’s with the claw hand?

whilst Sgt Stafford claimed the coveted
title of RAC Individual Champion.
Under the guidance of the RAC Sgt
Maj at the Army Inter Corps Champi-
onships, Capt Cooper’s, Capt Spicer’s
and Cpl Newbold’s efforts on court
resulted in the Corps team promoting
to the next division. There was noted
improvement of all player’s standard,
after being rigorously tested during the
three days of solid competition.
British Army Squash provides
amazing opportunities for budding
athletes to develop both on UK soil and
overseas. Good luck to Capt Spicer,
who has been selected to represent
the United Kingdom Armed Forces
team when touring the Miami circuit in
Florida next year.
