74 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards
Celebrating St David’s Day
On St David's Day 2024, 1st The Queen's
Dragoon Guards marked the Welsh
national day with a mix of pride and
tradition. In sunny Norfolk, the regiment
commemorated St David's Day with a
more traditional approach. The St David’s
day challenges started as ever with the
Commanding Officer issuing the tasks
and the Sqn getting hurriedly broken
down to apply troops to task. Rumours
were abounded with what the challenges
could be, and knowing how much Sqn
pride hangs in the balance everyone was
keen to do their bit, whatever it took and
wherever it would take them, regardless
of where they are in the world.
In Poland, A Squadron soldiers were
stationed alongside their NATO allies to
enhance deterrence and support regional
stability in Eastern Europe. Though far
from home, they made sure St David’s
Day did not go unnoticed. The squadron
marked the occasion with a traditional
Polish Breakfast, before they dialled in to
the remainder of the regiment to accept
the Commanding Officers challenges.
Though stationed thousands of miles away
from their families and home country, the
soldiers of A Squadron showed that no
matter where they serve, the spirit of
Wales and the traditions of their fore-
bearers remain strong. With St. David’s
Day celebrations on Op Cabrit 14, 2024
Back in Robertson Barracks, the rest of
the regiment commemorated St David's
Day with a more traditional approach and
this included a good old Rugby match of
Wales vs the rest of the World and we
also marked the day with a special regi-
mental parade to honour some special
achievements throughout the year espe-
cially the QDG Alpine Ski team for their
achievements of coming 2nd in the Army
decades. One of the highlights of the day
was the performance of the most Welsh
Trooper in each squadron battling it out
singing the Welsh national anthem whilst
dressed in a traditional Welsh rugby kit.
Whether deployed overseas or based
in the UK, the 1st The Queen's Dragoon
Guards continue to uphold their Welsh
roots, celebrating St David’s Day with
honour and unity.
