GOC 3(UK)XX Driven Shoot
On Friday, 29th November 2024, the
picturesque Wiltshire countryside
served as the backdrop for the GOC’s
3UKXX Driven Pheasant Shoot, an
event steeped in tradition and cama-
raderie. Representing 1st The Queen’s
Dragoon Guards (QDG), SSgt Wright
and Maj Cowen donned classic tweed
shooting attire to join this prestigious
gathering, blending military precision
with the age-old tradition of driven
shooting.
The day began early, with the sharp
winter air carrying the anticipation of
the participants as they assembled at
Tidworth’s cricket pavilion. Known for
its rolling hills, wooded valleys, and
expertly managed game reserves,
the location was the ideal setting
for such an event. SSgt Wright and
Maj Cowen were honoured to repre-
sent their regiment, standing proudly
among senior officers, dignitaries, and
representatives from across the Iron
Division.
The shoot itself consisted of four
drives, each meticulously planned to
present challenging yet ethical shoots.
Pheasants, expertly flushed by the
beaters and their dogs, soared high
over the line of guns. The participants,
including SSgt Wright and Maj Cowen,
demonstrated remarkable marksman-
ship and composure, embodying the
discipline and focus that are hallmarks
of military training. their efforts did not
go unnoticed, with other firers praising
their performance and representation
of the QDG.
One of the highlights of the day was
the traditional elevenses. Nestled in a
scenic clearing, participants gathered
for a well-earned break, enjoying a
spread of hearty refreshments that
included sandwiches, Macaroons,
Welsh cakes and steaming cups of tea
or mulled wine. The atmosphere was
one of camaraderie and conviviality,
as stories were shared, and laughter
echoed across the countryside.
As the day drew to a close, partici-
pants reflected on the success of the
event with a sit-down meal. For SSgt
Wright and Maj Cowen, it was a proud
moment to represent 1st The Queen’s
Dragoon Guards at such a prestig-
ious occasion. Their presence and
conduct exemplified the values of their
regiment, ensuring that the QDG name
was held in high regard.
The GOC’s Driven Shoot was more
than just a sporting event; it was a
celebration of heritage, camaraderie,
and excellence, and a day that will
be fondly remembered by all who
attended.
