In February 2023, during one of the coldest snaps in recent history, QDG’s expanded BGHQ landed in Toronto for Ex UNIFIED RESOLVE. The Canadian Army’s version of Ex CERBERUS and WARFIGHTER, it exists to validate Canadian higher headquarters before they deploy; in this case it was the Canadian 5th Division who were preparing to deploy to Latvia the following year. The QDG were there
as the Division’s eyes and ears on the ground, a role executed too effectively. Just as on Ex Cerberus the previous year, the decision was made to delib- erately hobble the QDG as we had yet again proved too lethal, which risked reducing the opportunities afforded to the Primary Training Audience.
We settled into our regime of two-, four- and six-hour planning cycles to test BGHQ’s ability to function under
pressure. Whilst BGHQ toiled away in their windowless room, Capts Fulloway and Cooper were busy with their US and Canadian counterparts sourcing invaluable intelligence. Outside of the planning cycles, there was little free time to explore Kingston itself. Ice hockey, live music and some impromptu “ice skating” on the rink in the centre of town gave BGHQ a taste of Canadian life.
