 St David’s Day
Staying in tune with so many previous years, 2023 has seen the Regiment deployed over various continents for St David’s Day. Remote participation has been the norm for some time and connectivity allows us to share the day. B Sqn were deployed to Kuwait on EX DESERT WARRIOR assisting the Kuwaiti Land Forces (KLF) whilst C Sqn (and a good number from HQ) were deployed to Fort Hood in Texas supporting EX WARFIGHTER. Despite the distance all -sub-units participated, including those Dragoons at ERE (F Sqn) corralled by Maj David Hoey and WO2 Thomas Hamilton.
Fundraising for the Dreams and Wishes charity is well and truly embedded in our business as usual and the day started with the sub-units working towards completing 262.5 miles each to maximise charitable donations. This was swiftly followed by a 0800hrs parade for the CO to issue the rest. Challenges had been pre released to allow B & C Sqn to get a full 24 hrs in whilst avoiding extreme heat or hurricanes depending on which side of the globe they were on!
Usual shenanigans ensued, as is the nature of QDG all attached arms put in massive effort, the largest craft daffodil on the continent is just one example! B Sqn included a lot of local traditions, replacing the Welsh cake with the Kuwaiti equivalent. C Sqn just had to keep explaining to dumbfounded Ameri- cans their actions! Luckily all got into the spirit, and some joined in.
At the results parade C Sqn could just about participate through Maj Mansel’s laptop and translations. All present were treated to a superb leak eating compe- tition as is tradition. Seniors performed well enough to be crowned winners. C Sqn however won the overall St David’s Day competition. The most interesting although unsurprising win was the best shout out on social media by a Welsh social media star, the most likes on any QDG post!
