work and have paid contributions you’re entitled to an allowance. Please get it sorted. By the way, I’m working here tonight, so you won’t be able to have the TV on. Do you mind? I was invited to oversee some paperwork. I’m famished: let’s eat.’
As Marissa dished up, she thought how Louisa loved to exaggerate her position at work. To hear her talk one would think she was the only person working in the building.
Throughout their meal, Louisa bored her sister by talking about her well-paid job, her friends, their holidays, new cars, and colleagues she didn’t have time for at work. Just normal run-of-the-mill chit-chat for her, thought Marissa. After dinner, she loaded the dishwasher and heard her sister yell out.
‘Drat! I’ve dropped my papers!’ Louisa exclaimed. ‘Urrrgh! Now I have to sort through this lot.’
A dinner plate crashed to the floor as Marissa spun round. She rushed into the lounge to find Louisa kicking a pile of papers.
‘I hope you haven’t broken a plate!’ snapped Louisa, as Marissa bent down to pick up the scattered papers and shuffled them onto the table where Louisa attempted to put them back in order. One or two had fluttered across the room. She inched sideways to pick them up. Her eyes rested on one paper. She couldn’t believe what she was reading. The name at the top glowed at her and she gave a wry smile.
