‘Here! Give it to me,’ snapped Louisa, grabbing the paper. ‘You’re not supposed to read these.’
‘I didn’t read anything. Why should I?’ answered Marissa. Back in the kitchen, she grinned like a Cheshire cat. Well, well. What a turn-up. Closing the dishwasher, she strolled into her room and quietly closed the door. She needed time to think and plan. The name flashed in front of her, mocking, taunting and bringing up memories that brought her close to tears. Then she caught sight of John’s clean pressed clothes on the chair. She threw them under the bed and thought about their earlier conversation. ‘He doesn’t enjoy seeing me any more. This is their fault, her fault,’ she seethed bitterly. ‘If it wasn’t for her, we’d still be a happy family.’
By now, she’d hoped Louisa would have wanted to meet John by insisting she contact the friend in Lincoln and go and fetch him. But Louisa never mentioned him and to Marissa it seemed cruel and callous. ‘I suppose she thinks I ring him every day in Lincolnshire. I wonder what she’d say if I told her where he was living. She’d probably have a fit and throw me out. No! I mustn’t let her get the better of me. I know what I have to do, but I can’t do it alone, so I’ll go and see John.’
