Pulling up outside Olivia Parker’s house, Kay wanted to know where they were going.
‘Nowhere in particular, Mum. We might go to the retail park. Mrs Parker is cooking us lunch, so we have to be back by one o’clock and then she’ll drive me home. See you later.’
No sooner had Kay’s car turned the corner when the girls ran off in the opposite direction to catch a shuttle bus into town. They got off at the bus terminal and hurried into the shopping centre to meet Sophie, Olivia’s older sister, at Frizzles Hair Salon.
‘Hi, Cara, I want to know about the rotten boy. Where’s your cousin? I thought she was coming,’ said Sophie.
Cara looked disappointed. ‘She wanted to, but her parents had other arrangements for today. I like your hair, Sophie; the colours are brilliant,’ she fibbed, staring at a head of green and yellow stripes.
‘Don’t worry,’ laughed Olivia. ‘It will wash out before Monday morning. Here, let’s sit down and you can update Sophie.’
The girls found a bench seat and sat down. Cara told her what had happened when she and Elise went to Annetta’s to meet their grandma.
‘We had to wait for the train, and over there, behind the barrier, stood a scruffy boy. I wouldn’t have taken any notice of him had he not stared at me for a long time. It was creepy. He’d disappeared by the time the train went past. But, the weirdest thing was when he sat outside the mobile phone shop begging in Clary Lane.’
