Sophie was curious. ‘Did he get any money?’
Cara pulled a face. ‘How do I know? We didn’t stick around long enough to find out. I thought seeing him might make Elise freak out or something.’
‘But you needn’t have worried because now you know that she did see him,’ stated Olivia. ‘Do you think she would have told her mum and dad?’
‘I doubt she would have told her mum, but she talks to her dad a lot. They’re very close although Elise wouldn’t admit it. Her step-dad was the first policeman her mum spoke to after Robin disappeared. Months later, I remember Elise ringing me to say that he and her mum had their first date at the local pub and he sent her flowers every week.’
‘Wow! How romantic. Our dad has never bought Mum flowers, has he, Soph?’ grimaced Olivia.
Cara smiled because her dad did enjoy buying flowers for her mum. ‘Anyway, back to the boy. Whilst I was away in London, my mum noticed him walking along our avenue. According to my dad, she panicked, and then Dad jumped in the car, drove like crazy and chased him across King’s Park. I bet the boy was terrified.’
For the next hour or so, the girls wandered in and out of the shops and department stores. Olivia bought a new pair of leggings, Cara, a necklace and Sophie treated herself to a new bra. Talking so much had made them thirsty so they headed to the escalator to find a table at the Buffet Bar. Gliding down towards them, Cara spotted her grandma. ‘Oh, no! Quick! Hide in here,’ she whispered, dragging the others with her.
