Afterwards, Cara stated it was a waste of time interrupting a lesson to read a book which bore no relevance to the subject. After all, she read at home all the time.

At the end of their drawn-out journey into the town centre,
Elise and Cara hopped off at the bus terminal and strolled into the crowded shopping centre. The fascination of having a level crossing and automatic barriers in the seaside town centre amused day-trippers and holidaymakers. But to some locals, the trains, at times, were a nuisance so people and cyclists often pushed the barriers up to beat the train though they weren’t supposed to.
The girls queued behind a barrier and it reminded Elise of when she arrived in Rauston Quay with her mum and her new dad, Steve. He’d often bring her here just to watch the trains and then they’d trot over the tracks to the café in the Museum for a drink and a chocolate muffin. Later, bringing her baby brother, Freddie, with them proved a challenge when they reached this spot. Her dad had to drag the buggy over the tracks and she’d giggle as Freddie bobbed up and down.
Bored with waiting, Elise knelt to speak to a baby girl in a buggy and didn’t notice the crowd gathering behind the barrier opposite. Cara smiled at the influx of Rauston students mingling with shoppers. Probably killing time
