someone older who had a car nearby and could follow them. Elise’s sudden question startled her.
‘When is Grandma coming?’
‘I’ve had an idea! Why don’t I call Grandma and ask her to meet us around the corner in the Waitrose car park? It will be quicker and save her driving on the one-way system.’
Elise shrugged and looked on as her cousin chatted to their grandma. ‘Brilliant! OK, Grandma. The front entrance. See you soon,’ said Cara, popping her mobile back in her bag. ‘She’ll be there in about ten minutes. Annetta! May we go through your back door? There’s someone outside from school. I don’t want to talk right now.’
In a flash, Elise headed back towards the window but Cara caught her arm. ‘Come on, we’ll be late.’ She didn’t like lying but she didn’t want to go into it with Annetta at this point. Annetta obliged and unlocked the back door. ‘Careful now, don’t talk to any strangers, girls,’ she grinned. ‘Give my love to your grandma and tell her I’ve booked her in for April 11th for her next appointment.’
A narrow lane behind the shop led to a private car park for shop owners. The girls weaved through the cars to the exit in Wharf Street. From there it was fifty metres or so to Waitrose. They waited at the crossing for the lights to change to green and hurried into the car park. Cara casually glanced over her shoulder; no one was following. Standing by the store’s front entrance they waited for Alice Henderson’s white car to pull up. When it arrived Cara felt relieved to get inside.
