‘Mr Bannister!’ exclaimed Steve. ‘What brings you out here?’
‘What the ... good grief! You scared the living daylights out of me, Constable. Is there a problem?’
‘Sorry, sir. The station received a call tonight and reported flashing lights in the vicinity.’
‘Ah! My apologies, officers,’ he said, waving his torch. ‘I occasionally come back and have a wander around the old place. So many happy memories, don’t you think?’ He gazed at the remains of a once prosperous and recognised establishment. ‘I can remember every man who worked here. It was a sad day when we had to close the business. I’m still waiting for investors to come along and take it off my hands. Thank you for coming, but I must be off. I’ll just have time for a quick half in the Jolly Sailor.’
‘We can’t help wondering why it’s here. It looks new, Mr Bannister. When was it built?’ inquired Steve, closely examining the shed.
‘That’s easy to explain, officer. I had an offer for the land a while back, and the company supplied the cabin for the demolition team to use for tea breaks and such. Then the company pulled out at the last minute and didn’t reclaim it,’ said Mr Bannister, firmly.
‘Have you noticed anyone loitering around?’ asked Liam.
‘No, I haven’t. Don’t you worry, officers. It’s locked and screwed to the ground so it won’t be going anywhere for the time being. Mind you, a police presence now and again is enough to keep people away. Goodnight, lads.’
