Louisa Kilroy stepped out of her bath and wrapped herself in a warm towel. She was drying her hair when she heard
a knock on the door.
‘Get that, will you,’ she called to her sister. A second
knock infuriated her. ‘For once, can’t you drag yourself away from the television!’
Louisa opened the door a fraction and peeped out. ‘Hello,’ said the caller. ‘I’m from apartment eleven. A friend has called us to give you an urgent message. Marissa Collins son is in Rauston Hospital. He was knocked down this morning and the hospital and police are anxious to find his parents.’
‘There’s no Marissa Collins living here. You have the wrong address,’ she snarled, pushing to shut the door.
With her foot in the doorway, Helen said: ‘You’re mistaken, Miss Kilroy. Marissa lives with you and has a son and I’ve seen him leaving this building. He lives here. You will tell her, won’t you? Good evening.’
Despite the alarming news that a boy had been injured, Helen couldn’t help but feel satisfaction that Miss Kilroy and her guest had finally been rumbled. Alice will love this, she thought, as she walked back along the corridor.
