She strode across the room, grabbed the remote and switched the TV off, much to Melanie’s annoyance. ‘Why
did you do that? It hasn’t finished yet.’
‘So sorry, Marissa Collins! But you have, sister dear.
Your son has had an accident and is in hospital. Would you like me to help you pack? After all, it’s a long journey back to Lincolnshire, isn’t it?’ said Louisa bitterly.
Melanie sat stony-faced and her heart started to pound in her chest. ‘It’s a lie. He’s staying with friends and they would have telephoned me here.’
‘Whereabouts?’ demanded Louisa, standing over her sister. ‘Give me your friend’s telephone number and I’ll speak to him or better still, I’ll call Lincoln police station.’
‘I can’t,’ muttered Melanie, getting up and moving to the door.
‘Why not?’
‘Because he isn’t there!’ screamed Melanie. ‘He’s here, living in a shed on the heath.’
‘Shed! You’re joking. What shed? I won’t tolerate this. I’m calling the police to tell them his mother is here.’
‘You wouldn’t dare. If you do, I’ll say you knew about Jake but wouldn’t allow him to stay here. You found it and insisted he live there.’
‘Get out of my home. Now!’ said Louisa.
Melanie flew to her room and dragged a suitcase out from under the bed. She threw whatever clothing she could grab, rammed everything inside and zipped it up. Her paperwork file, bank stuff and notepad ended up in a carrier bag with her handbag. She went out into the hall
