‘Good idea. I have some interesting news for you, courtesy of Marjorie. Alan Cooper turned up on Tuesday. Young Jake sent a letter to his dad’s bank and they gave it to him. The boy was living alone in a wooden cabin on Stuart Bannister’s land where he had the engineering business.’
‘Blimey, that’s terrible. Is that why we saw him near the underpass? Who put him there and why?’
‘She didn’t say, but I’ll find out more when I see her. She’s invited me to meet Alan at their home. I haven’t said I’d go yet. Jake is in hospital. It seems he got tangled up with a car on a busy road in town.’
‘Mum, you have to go for Elise’s sake. I met him years ago in Emily’s garden; he seemed an agreeable chap. Would you like me to come with you?’
‘Yes, please. I’ll ring Marjorie before I go to bed and send you a text. They might expect us to go to dinner. Is that OK with you?’
‘I’ll look forward to it. I haven’t them in ages. Bye for now.’
