Fifteen minutes later they arrived at Rauston Academy, waved goodbye and hurried through the main gate.
‘Cara Maitland!’ a squeaky voice yelped: ‘You’re too early.’
Cara sighed and told Elise to go on ahead. ‘Sorry, Miss Kilroy, but my mother brought Elise today and couldn’t wait around for another half an hour. She has to go to work. It was either me arriving early or Elise arriving late.’
The tutor huffed, put her shoulders back and stood as tall as she could with her chin sticking out. Another year and Cara would tower above her and look down to speak. ‘Hurry along then.’
‘Roll on September; I’ll be rid of you,’ Cara mumbled as she strolled away. Running up the staircase to the third floor, she glanced outside at the cars pulling in and out. Then she stopped dead in her tracks. Leaning against a lamp post, in front of a house across the road, stood the same boy and he was staring up to where she stood. Now she was really worried. I don’t know who you are, but I’m jolly well going to try and find out. I’ve seen your face before – but where? I’ll have a chat with Grandma. She recognises most of the beggars and rough sleepers who live here. Maybe she’ll know if I describe you to her. She hurried on and went to her classroom.
Saturday arrived and Cara set off to visit her grandma. Elise chose to go out with her mum and Freddie, saving Cara the worry of going into town together and risk being followed again.
