Kay hung up her jacket in the hall, went into the kitchen and started putting the shopping away. ‘What colour this time?’ she frowned, shaking her head as she opened the freezer.
‘Sort of honeycomb beige. It’s better than the stripey grey she had before. What’s for dinner?’
‘Fish!’
Cara made her mum a coffee, washed some baby potatoes and set the table in the dining room. Glancing at the front window she called out: ‘Dad’s here!’
Throughout dinner, she was tempted to tell them about the boy but then thought better of it. After all, nothing had happened. Her parents eagerly discussed their day at work.
‘No homework, Cara?’
‘I doubt it, Dad. The teachers were running around outside like headless chickens trying to get everyone home safely. If we go back tomorrow, I expect to have double.’
Cara’s mobile rang. She took it out of her pocket and raced upstairs, saying: ‘Hi, Olivia. What’s happening?’
Half an hour later, she came down looking disappointed. ‘The gas company will have fixed the boiler by tonight so it’s back to normal.’ Pouring custard over her pudding, she added: ‘According to our website, each year group has to arrive at a different time. Elise, normal time, but I’m thirty minutes later. It’s to allow everyone to collect their belongings from wherever they left them and return to their form tutors for registration. It’s your turn tomorrow, Mum.’
‘Thank you, Cara. I hadn’t forgotten,’ said her mum,
