When the taxi pulled up in the driveway, Marjorie came out to welcome Alan. Jake rushed inside to the lounge. ‘Dad, come and listen to this. Marjorie has taught me a tune on the piano. I’d like to learn how to play properly because she thinks I have potential,’ he smiled, grinning from ear to ear. ‘Then I can play keyboard and maybe join a group.’
‘I said you would enjoy learning the piano,’ corrected Marjorie. ‘Dinner’s ready and it’s an early start for you, young man, in the morning.’
Alan felt impressed and proud by Jake’s appearance. The anguish of the last few days had melted away. Something magical had happened to his son, and he thought much of it was down to Marjorie’s no-nonsense attitude. Alan still had a lot of work to do relating to Jake’s experience with his mother, but today was the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. Ahead lay opportunities where he and Jake could get to know each other and spend quality time together. In Inverness, the authorities had read Jake’s profile and would work alongside his dad. They warned Alan about setbacks but felt he had the patience and love to overcome any issues with his son. They’d secured a place for him at a school and he’d receive additional private tuition supplemented by the Bannisters and the Terrence Foundation.
In the morning, Jake didn’t want to leave Marjorie and Stuart, the two people who made him feel loved. He promised himself he would never forget their kindness and beautiful home. Wearing pressed jeans, a blue cotton shirt,
