terminal. With a fixed grin, he looked left and right through the windows on either side as the plane taxied to the runway.
‘Are you ready?’ smiled his dad.
Leaning back and still grinning, the engines grew louder. ‘Now we’re motoring, Dad.’ The plane gained speed along the runway and whoosh. Up it went.
‘That was brill, Dad,’ grinned Jake. ‘We’re climbing. Can we do it again?’
Sitting beside a window seat gave him the chance to see England from a different perspective and made the journey interesting and rewarding. He never stopped talking, and Alan had his first taste of things to come. He’d lived alone and now he’d hear another voice echo around the house. One day, he’d tell him the truth. Why Melanie went to Rauston Quay and about the incident at the apartment after his mum walked out of Shatford Lodge. Alan wasn’t sure how long they would detain his wife. If and when she recovered, Jake might want to see her but now he wanted to see his future. The past could wait.
Alan pointed out landmarks as their plane flew over the border between England and Scotland. It was an awesome sight seeing the mountains for the first time. Not only did Jake want to learn to play the piano, he also wanted to rock climb. ‘Sure,’ smiled Alan. ‘You’re free to do whatever you want.’
