‘Just tell the truth. My mum ran over a rabbit and you insisted on stopping to see if it was still breathing,’ gabbled Elise, running up the stairs.
‘And it was. The vet praised my quick thinking, and I saved a wild animal from a slow death,’ piped Cara. ‘I’ll soon find out how compassionate Nutty is when I give her my lateness excuse. Her reaction will seal our relationship for a year.’
‘What about me? I’ve never had a behaviour point for lateness. I’d prefer a stronger excuse such as saving someone from drowning,’ boasted Elise.
Cara grinned. ‘Who did you say you have this year?’
‘Miss Drinkwater! Ha! Ha! See you at lunch. Have a good morning.’

Dear Mr and Mrs Bates and Elise, Mrs Henderson and Mr and Mrs Maitland and Cara.
I would like to tell you something that I have never told anyone except Mr Bannister. I spoke to him before Dad and I left for Scotland. He agreed that you have every reason to think the way you do about me. But it is time to tell the truth. On that horrible day neither of us wanted to go to the quarry.
