we want. She called for Cara to come inside. ‘Have you mentioned the boy to your mum and dad?’
Cara shook her head as Alice handed her a plate of fresh salmon, potatoes and mixed salad.
‘I’ve texted Uncle Steve about him,’ Alice said. ‘Promise me you won’t tell Auntie Emily or Elise about the boy or the album. We don’t want to scare Elise, do we?’
‘No, of course not. I don’t want to make a fuss, Grandma, or upset Auntie Emily. Why do you want to speak to Uncle Steve?’
‘Just a precaution, sweetheart. The school can do without his kind hanging around. If he’s not a beggar he might be selling drugs or something else.’
Cara stared at her grandma and frowned. ‘Drugs? I hadn’t thought of that. I think school has security cameras for that sort of thing, though.’
‘So there is no harm in the police wanting to visit the school and warn the head teacher to be on the lookout. Eat up – I have your favourite dessert to tackle later.’
Engaging in light conversation about school and the forthcoming half-term brightened the mood. Cara enjoyed her salmon and was about to tuck into a strawberry trifle when someone banged on the front door.
Alice opened the door to Steve and his colleague who were both in uniform. ‘Crikey, that was quick. The neighbours will think I’ve robbed a bank. I hope you didn’t arrive on lights?’
