need to report it. Whatever he’s doing here, he may have recognised Cara from her visits to Nestonbrook.’
‘I doubt it, Steve,’ said Kay. ‘He never came near to Foxglove Cottage when we visited. Anyway, Cara has grown up, but Elise’s face hasn’t really changed since she was little. She might be taller, but her lovely flowing curls are the same. If it was him, he’d recognise her.’
‘OK. If we spot him on CCTV cameras wandering alone in the town, one of our officers will have a chat with him and ask his name. Then Alice will rest. Anyway, I’m bringing Cara home.’
He returned inside the bungalow grinning and had Cara in fits of laughter soon enough. ‘I am arresting you, Miss. Eating this poor, old, frail lady out of house and home is an offence and I will have to take you into custody. I should cuff you but on this occasion, I’ll trust you not to escape. Come quietly and don’t make a fuss.’
To the amusement of Liam, who joined in the game, Cara stood up giggling, kissed her grandma and dutifully followed the officers into the road with her head bowed. A nosey neighbour stared over the fence and Steve added: ‘A few days in a cell will work wonders.’
Alice stepped up and almost cuffed him on the ear. She smiled at her neighbour. ‘Don’t take any notice, Joan. He’s joking; he’s my son-in-law.’ Turning back to Steve she scoffed: ‘Listen here, PC Plod, get going and don’t you dare put that siren on. Bye, Cara. Tell Mum I’ll talk to her later. See you soon. Love you.’
