Chapter Three
Earlier that year, in January, a woman, calling herself Marissa Collins stood outside Lincoln train station feeling guilty. She’d left her thirteen-year-old son, John, alone in their rented rooms with strict instructions: ‘Keep the door locked and place a chair under the handle. Don’t leave the building and don’t make a sound.’ She’d promised to be back within two days.
Sitting alone on the train, she felt anxious at the prospect of seeing her sister after all these years. Gazing out of the window, she thought back to happier times when she left school. Marissa had gladly accepted a job in a large department store in Allington, their home town.
