Ever since, Marissa had blamed his friend’s mum for the police investigation, court case, and for John being sent away to a secure children’s home in 2017. He hated his confinement. The first weeks away from home distressed him. Education, whilst in care, is important for every child and once he’d relaxed and got accustomed to the routines he shone in his lessons, sport, and self discipline.
Unbeknown to John, his parents were living apart because of his dad’s job. Working in Scotland, his dad was longing for the day when his wife and son could join him and they could be together. Meanwhile, his mum was living alone in Sorrenbridge, feeling unhappy and running out of money despite the cheques her husband sent her. In the end, she had to sell most of their furniture and possessions and move into a small rented flat. But whilst his dad waited, his mum secretly left Sorrenbridge, moved to Lincolnshire to be closer to John, and broke off all ties with his dad. She felt convinced that her husband wanted to break up anyway and start divorce proceedings, so she decided not to stay in one place for too long. Without a permanent address no one could trace her, or so she thought. It was then that she changed her name to Marissa Collins.
Believing she had no future, she flitted from one grotty building to another, frittering her money on whatever took her fancy, namely scratch cards, gambling machines and taxis to see her son. She’d got away with it until she was suddenly thrown out of the flat she was living in. A charity
