Fastening her seat belt, Cara still couldn’t stop smiling. ‘If only Miss Killjoy could see me now.’
Alice jumped when she heard a brief whoop of the siren and returned inside, allowing herself a half-smile. Steve’s method of playing down a possible complex situation had worked. She took her tea into the lounge and mulled over her thoughts and fears. For Cara to see the boy once was acceptable, but to see him a second and third time seemed odd. Regardless of the boy’s identity, why wasn’t he at school? Where does he live and with whom? I suppose Steve could be right, she muttered to herself. It could be literally any boy, not who we think it is, but I have a gut feeling it’s something else. What if I’m jumping the gun? The boy could be innocent and just happen to share the same facial expression and hairstyle with someone we thought monstrous and responsible for a tragic death.
