Elise’s day on Skipper Beach reminded her of the wonderful days she’d shared with her brother, Robin. Although their term-time visits to Rauston Quay were limited, Grandma made up for it at Easter, during the school holidays and at Christmas. From their home in Nestonbrook, eighty miles away, holidays demanded intricate planning, packing and a strict timetable. From an early age, she and Robin became accustomed to the long coach and train journeys but Grandma made sure their time at the seaside was worth it. They enjoyed days full of adventures, discoveries, picnics, barbecues, games, and kite flying competitions. Robin always won.
Last year, Elise had nervously started a term at a new school after she and her family moved to Rauston Quay. Her knowledge and familiarity of the area enabled her to adapt quickly and make new friends.
Today, Gemma’s mum, Mrs Harris, fussed over them. Nothing was too much for her and from her smiley face, Elise understood why her friend was so bubbly. Cara and Olivia watched as families arrived to play on the beach and Cara scanned the clifftops for any sign of the boy. He didn’t appear, so she soon forgot about him.
The four girls explored rock pools and inlets as they competed to collect shells before enjoying a picnic lunch on the beach. Olivia was in a playful mood and organised the games. By the time Pete arrived, the girls were so immersed with playing and dancing in the water, they ignored his shouts. He had to clamber over rocks to get
