certain the boy you’ve seen in the scruffy clothes, is him.’ Cara frowned. ‘But what does it have to do with me and
Elise?’
Pete understood his daughter’s indifference and leant
forward to get her full attention. ‘The police took the boys into custody and later, the brothers went to a rehabilitation centre. We understood the Cooper boy went away too, but we were never told where or for how long. Both families relocated to be closer to their children, and both mothers believed Auntie Emily and Elise were responsible for their punishment. We are worried in case the boy has come here either to make trouble or seek revenge. For the time being, we must be vigilant. Uncle Steve hasn’t told Auntie Emily or Elise and we are hoping to resolve the matter without their knowledge. I am sorry.’
Cara stared into space as confused emotions swirled in her head. After a silence, her mum touched her hand.
‘I’m not frightened, Mum, and I can cope with it. I think the boy is a twit, and trying to pull a stupid stunt will only get him into more trouble. If he came near me I’d whack him and then ask questions later. I understand why you didn’t tell me the truth; it might have tainted the happy memories I shared in Foxglove Cottage. Now, apart from the ones of Robin, I don’t feel anything for Nestonbrook.’
‘Our biggest fear is, does he know where Auntie Emily and Elise live? He’s found out where we live. How long will it be before he finds Southcliff Drive?’
