The Maitland family rose early on Thursday morning for their appointment at Rauston Quay Police Station. Cara was still thinking about the London show and her time with Alice so remained silent throughout the journey and felt her stomach tighten. She was a key witness – to what? It made little sense even when her parents had told her about the Heath Road incident. She thought they were exaggerating, especially when they suggested that she and Elise could be in danger. Cara had demanded the truth and refused to budge until she was given a full explanation as
to why she should go with them to the station.
Kay had had no choice. ‘At the time, Robin’s death was enough for you to cope with so we didn’t reveal the full details for fear of upsetting you even more. After he went missing, an intense police search was carried out across the village and the quarry. Robin wasn’t alone, as you were led to believe. Two brothers and a third boy had accompanied him, all intent on racing their bikes through the quarry. A scuffle broke out and Robin tried to defend himself in the quarry against one of the brothers, the village bully. Whilst doing so, the other two boys stood at the top of the quarry shouting at them to stop. The bully ignored their pleas. Suddenly, a rock hurtled down into the quarry. Robin looked up but wasn’t quick enough to get
out of its path. The rock hit his head, and he fell to the ground.’
Kay was choking back tears at this point but added: ‘The boy who threw the rock was Jake Cooper and we are
