and we all had to get out and go to the field. Lewis Palmer screamed it was a bomb and started a panic. It was pandemonium for a while. Everyone is on the field and we can’t go back inside,’ said Cara rapidly. ‘We have to go home or to friends. I called Mum, but she’s alone on reception and can’t leave. Can we meet you at Annetta’s Nail Salon? I have to find Elise first and then we’ll catch the next shuttle to the bus terminal.’
‘All right. Do you have any money on you for the fare?’
‘I don’t need any. I grabbed my bag so I can pay with my phone. I must go, Grandma, otherwise we’ll have to wait for a later bus.’
Cara stood on a wall to survey the chaos around her as she searched for Elise. Students bustled back and forth to form registration queues in front of their form tutors before leaving. She’d never find Elise in the crowds and had no idea of her assembly point location. Simon, a classmate, looked up and asked if she was all right.
‘I’m trying to find my cousin, Elise Goodwin. I haven’t a clue where she is, Simon.’
‘Year 7 is over there,’ he said, pointing to the far side of the field. ‘Stay put and keep looking. I’ll barge through to see if I can find her.’
He returned breathless, dragging Elise behind him clutching her school bag. ‘Thanks, Simon. Hurry, Elise, we have to catch the next shuttle,’ called Cara. ‘Hang on! We can’t leave before signing out.’
‘I’ve done it already with Miss Tindall, and told her I’m leaving with you,’ replied Elise. ‘You go on ahead and I’ll
