Fancy a really good walk? Islip Ramblers get about a bit...
Islip Ramblers Society was founded on Sunday 4th March 2018, although its story goes back further.
It all started on a wet Sunday afternoon
in The Rose & Crown pub in Islip, when our founding father Mr John Roberts a veteran hiker from North Wales was chatting to the Pub Landlord Mark, and another new face from the village, Karl. John had wanted for a few years to start a social walking group for all abilities and ages. Mark was at that time training for an Ultra Series Challenge, The Cateran Yomp up in Perthshire, Scotland and Karl just wanted to get to know more people in the village and get a bit healthier.
A few iterations of the walking group name later, and Islip Ramblers Society was formed.
Our inaugural ramble was as noted above on Sunday 4th March 2018 at 10am from The Rose & Crown carpark. All abilities, ages and good doggies welcome. We got a great response with 20 walkers turning up and 6 dogs. The oldest walker was 68 years old (also one of the fittest), the youngest was 2 and the son of Mark, the Pub Landlord. Since that first walk our numbers have grown; we now have members from Thrapston, Woodford and other surrounding villages as far as Brigstock and Burton Latimer. Our walks are always on the first Sunday of each month at 10am from The Rose & Crown, Islip (NN14 3JS) carpark.
We welcome new members with open arms. It is a great way to make new friends, get out and about, or just to see the beautiful countryside and diverse wildlife
(opportunities for some landscape and nature photography too) that we are lucky to have on our doorsteps. Most walks, due to the nature of where we live, are quite flat and range from five to seven miles (a map of each proposed walk is displayed on the pub noticeboard for a couple of weeks prior to each event) and we always end up at a pub in time for lunch. Walking with us is free for everyone. We are a social walking group.
Occasional extra walks may be added during the year to explore new areas. Last year’s expedition was a journey to the Peak District, and new destinations are being considered for 2020.
