CELEBRATING PEACE
Oundle Museum
These are photographs of two rather special posters we have in our collection in the Museum. Dated Saturday the 19th July 1919, they were issued to advertise a celebration of ‘Peace’ after the traumatic First World War.
The first poster is
advertising the programme
of proceedings for the
day, starting at 8am with a
‘Merry Peal’ of the Parish
Church bells, and finishing
with a river fete with
illuminated and decorated
boats on the water near
Oundle School boat house.
It must have been an amazing sight to see. There were also fireworks, and the finale was singing the National Anthem with cheers to the King and Queen. Sadly, we have no photographs of the event so if anyone has any we would love to see them.
The second poster is advertising the programme of sports starting at 2.15pm, with all sorts of events from a fancy dress parade to tug of war, egg and spoon races, and even musical ‘chairs’ on cycles – that sounds like hilarious fun. We had this poster made into a tea towel
in celebration of 100 years since the event, and
we still have some left in the Museum for sale (only £5 each). Let us know if you would like one, or pop into the Museum at the weekends, to purchase.
The Museum is now open for the season with a new exhibition ‘Off the Shelf ’ showcasing items never been on display before. Open every Saturday and Sunday from 1-4pm.
