The Henry VC Mess
1 RHA’s senior non-commissioned officers have maintained an active mess despite the challenges presented by COVID-19. Out- door mess meetings are but one example of how the mess has adapted to ensure maximum participation. The Mess held a Pro- motions Night in this format to welcome new members into the mess and to congratulate those current members who also received promotions, which was a great success.
Most notable this year has been the opening of the new Henry VC Mess, marking a new chapter in the history of the 1 RHA War- rant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess.
The mess, again shared by the three aforementioned Regiments, was officially dedicated the Henry VC Mess in memory of Ser- geant Major Andrew Henry VC, who received the Victoria Cross for a desperate defence of the guns during the Battle of Inkerman (Crimea, 1854). His Battery having been surrounded and wiped out by Russian infantry; Sergeant Major Henry continued to fight despite suffering 12 separate bayonet wounds. For this action he was also awarded the VC and a battlefield commission.
Shortly after opening, the Henry VC mess has also hosted LS&GC ceremonies where the following were issued their LS&GC med-
