 Interservices Volleyball
Maj Moxon-Wiggins
The 2022 Interservice Volleyball Competition was hosted by the Army on
14 Jun 22 in Aldershot. Competing against the Navy and the RAF, this was only the second time that the Army Squad had the opportunity to train and compete since Volleyball England announced the return to competitive volleyball post-COVID.
At their first run out in May 2022, the Army ladies had unfortunately conceded their Crown Services trophy to the RAF. Having firmly rebuffed the RAF, Navy, Police, Fire and Prison services in the group stages, facing the RAF Hawks again in the final proved one match too many. The Inters in June therefore, was a grudge match!
For myself, joining the squad again after over 3 years away (thanks to maternity leave, recovery and COVID) I was filled
with fear! I promptly volunteered to play for the mixed team, sometimes seen as less competitive/more fun, but was promptly told to get back in my box and join the 1st team – cue even more fear! Our coach, WO2 Nicola White, is not somebody you want to disappoint; I blame her impressive resume as UKAF coach and manager of the England U16s national squad, but mainly it’s her black belt in kickboxing and Army Tae Kwon Do background!
The Ladies team came out on top and beat the RAF in the final. In a reversal of fortunes, the Men’s team lost out in the final to the RAF having just beaten them
at Crown Services, meaning that the Army mixed team were the only team to win both Crowns and Inters in 2022. All in all, Army volleyball has come back from COVID in
a good place, and we are looking to build on our team and talents by introducing as many new players as possible to the sport. The next training camp focused on developing new players will be at Perham Down Barracks, Wiltshire, 30 Nov – 2 Dec 22. RADC players wishing to attend are welcome to submit their names through Orianne.moxon-wiggins569@mod.gov.uk
Never missing an opportunity to recruit for Volleyball please be aware that there are moves ahead to create an AMS Volleyball association, which is being supported by the AMS Sports Association. Anybody who is interested in being added to the mailing list as a potential player, once we get off
the ground is to contact Orianne.moxon- wiggins569@mod.gov.uk
