HQSW FESTIVAL OF SPORT
Headquarters South West Region held a Female Festival of Sport on Wed 22 Jun 22 in Jellalabad Barracks, Tidworth. Circa 150 women competed in 5 sports. The aim of the FoS was to maximise participation at a grass roots level and promote female sport within the Army. The Female FoS delivery team recognises the difficulties female soldiers endure and the lack of opportunities for regimental teams to compete in various sporting events. Therefore, the Female FoS is conducted so that individuals/teams have the opportunity to participate and try sports that they may not otherwise be able to. All points gained contribute to the ‘Army Sports Trophy’ competition.
4 Med Regt entered a team into every sport, thanks to additional support from SDO of Tidworth Dental Centre, with the RADC participants and results below:
Basketball: Maj Moxon-Wiggins, SSgt Vicki Griffiths (DPHC), and LCpl Anjana Sahi all enjoyed a thoroughly competitive group stage. Emerging 4th in our group, we narrowly missed out on a place in the play- offs but had an opportunity to see some real talent.
Badminton: LCpl Bree Duckworth (DPHC) entered what turned out to be a very high calibre badminton competition as an individual and had a competitive but enjoyable day.
Squash: Both SSgt Griffiths and LCpl Duckworth entered the individual squash competition in the beginners category and enjoyed the opportunity to try out a new sport.
Football: LCpl Sophie McNally (Captain) led the team with Maj Moxon-Wiggins in
goal. Having conceded no goals in the group stages, a more competitive Q-F and S-F saw two goals conceded, with eventual triumph in a final completely dominated by 4 Med. It was great to see the talent displayed by LCpl McNally, an experienced AMS footballer.
BAWF: We had no RADC representation in the British Army Warrior Fitness competition (think Crossfit) but I am sure there is more talent further afield in the South West region.
Looking ahead to the next HQSW Female FOS on 21 June 2023, anyone interested in competing is free to contact Orianne.moxon- wiggins569@mod.gov.uk if you would like to be sent the AI once distributed. In addition there is an HQSW Sports League (male and female) running in various locations starting from Sep 2022 as detailed below. The event lead for further information is Capt Colin. Suffield478@mod.gov.uk.
RADC at the AMS FESTIVAL OF SPORT 22 Jun 22
Further to the success of the AMS Festival of Sport in 2021, 4 Med Regt hosted the AMS FoS 2022, in Tidworth over the period 4-7 July 2022. Using the platform of friendly sporting competition, the FoS aimed to draw together as many AMS personnel together as possible, under the key
themes of Celebration, Comradeship and Competition.
Capt Liz Humphreys managed to touch base with a few of the RADC personnel who were in attendance:
CDO(A) Col Tim Davies attended in his role as AMS Netball President. Lt Col Lee Beales attended in his role as 1 Med Regt Commanding Officer. Maj Tom Marriott
put in a solid performance in the shot put and tug of war. Maj Marriot’s unit 4 Med Regt went on to win the tug of war. LCpl Sophie McNally captained the 4 Med Regt Football team to another set of gold medals to add to their impressive trophy cabinet, as well as participating in the track Athletic events. LCpl Monica Cacho from 3Med Regt participated in the Badminton and the Track/Field Athletic events. Maj Moxon- Wiggins attended as the Volleyball Lead for the Competition.
