  Paragliding
course
Crickhowell
Captain Angshu Gurung
I was fortunate enough to be able to land a space for a foundation paragliding course for a week in Crickhowell (pun intended).
I arrived at Robson Resilience Centre (RPGC) Crickhowell on 15th May to receive the brief for the week. I met the three other individuals for the course and was surprised when I found out that they had done this before. They had been on the course multiple times as they had not been able
to complete the jumps required. They were hoping for better luck this time with the weather as it was their second or even third attempt.
The first day involved teachings about terrain, wind, cloud and weather. However, we went out to the field straight away to get maximum possibility for jumps as the weather was looking promising. Everything
started from the basics and we were fitted into out harness and shown how to take care of it properly as well as focusing on safety. Importance was given to ensure no hazards prior to launching i.e. sheep.
The inspections were completed, and I started my forward launch practices. It was not like anything I have ever tried before. The instructor kept shouting “bigger steps and strides” as I tried my best. I was not matching the strides that he was expecting but I did glide!
I may have brought the luck from Northern Ireland! We had great weather on the course, and I managed to complete the training in one go. The flights I had were amazing and the feeling you have whilst in the air is indescribable.
The next stage is to complete club pilot training which will allow me to practice with local clubs and gain confidence in flying solo.
