P. 31

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Morrison hands over command of the Defence Animal Training Regiment in September 2017 after three years in post and moves to Army Headquarters in Andover as SO1 Veterinary Capability.
During his tenure, the unit has consolidated
as an ARTD Training Regiment within the Royal
School of Military Engineering Group. The structural
changes made under his predecessor are now well
embedded and much effort has been put in to tying
down the unit’s non-training outputs under more
formal agreement. This has helped strengthen the
unit’s relationship with several key customers, in
particular London District. The transformation to
Training Regiment will be complete on 1st April 2017, when the Implementation Order for the unit to re-badge nally takes effect.
For much of the last three years, the Regiment has been under review as part of the ARTD Training Development Programme. The review looked again at whether elements of the Regiment could be out-sourced to industry. The review has concluded that the unit should continue in its current shape for the foreseeable
future and has supported a small adjustment in the number and rank structure of some of the military staff to create an even more sustainable structure in the future. This is a tremendous vote of con dence in the unit and a testament to the hard work and passion shown by military and civilian staff alike.
Over the last few years, a steady stream of senior of cers have visited the Regiment. All have been impressed with the quality of the training and the positive learning experience expressed by the students. They have particularly noted the outstanding apprenticeship programmes and the work going on to innovate training, not least by incorporating new learning technologies and blended
learning techniques. A main effort has been to restore the depth and professionalism of the dog training cadre within Defence. The creation of the new Dog Trainer Quali cation course has been central to the course has already started to redress the balance. The hope remains that the course will eventually become established as a formal apprenticeship under the Government’s new Trailblazer scheme.
