Engineer Regiment. During Ex DRAGON’S DEMONSTRATE, one of the Pioneer Sections were attached to the French Infantry Platoon where they provided a breaching team, conducting explosive method of entry into a building for the French to assault.
The Assault Pioneers worked with the Royal Engineers on several occasions. We were invited to their demolition ranges to test our route denial skills using explosives and experimented cutting charges on different obstacles from Dragon’s Teeth to cars. We deployed on Ex ZULU DAWN with the engineers where we went through field fortifications and bridge denial.
The Pioneers worked hard on building our own skills and drills, pushing ourselves to make us the best Pioneer Platoon in
the Army. We conducted our own section competition in which the sections were assessed on their map reading, use of the VALLON, confirmation drills, demolition calculations, check-point construction, minefield clearance, observational skills and fire control orders. We also made use of the Senior Major’s credit card and generosity
to have several sections of railway built so we could practice the most efficient way
to deny a modern constructed railway
with explosives; on one attempt we had catastrophic success. We also purchased several doors made of different materials
to practice different methods of explosive method of entry.

The Pioneer Platoon are also the custodians of the Battalion’s Corps of Drums, who were also very busy during our time in Estonia. We integrated the Pipes and Drums of the Royal Tank Regiment into the Corps and performed at various displays and events throughout Estonia from Tallinn to Parnu. Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Estonia was fortunate enough to host an excellent display when we supported an Embassy event to commemorate Her Majesty’s Birthday. On return to the UK, we will be handing over the DMaj’s Mace to C Company to allow us to concentrate on the critical role of Assault Pioneers.
