In praise of the glorious Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ & to the memory of Isabella, Richard Lee Bevan dedicates this window mdccclxxxvii
the wording is specific: while this window’s object is commemoration, its subject is Resurrection. Kempe could not preach from a pulpit because of his stammer, but after more than 130 years, stained glass such as this fine window still speaks eloquently for him and memorably to us:
Doctrine and life, colour and light, in one When they combine and mingle, bring
A strong regard and awe: but speech alone Doth vanish like a flaring thing.
george Herbert: The Windowes
In conclusion of this story, the trust contracted ICon Conservators Limelight studios Ltd to remove the entire window as per the specification. Unfortunately as the lancets were carefully removed, the soft northamptonshire Ironstone surrounding the glass largely came away too resulting in some thousands of pounds of excess expenditure. the refined new stonework undertaken by Clarendon Builders combined with return of the stained glass has presented Holy sepulchre Church with a magnificent and fully restored window, admired by hundreds of visitors at the recent Heritage open Days. the final cost of this contract was nearly £62,000 and has added another WoW! to the wonders of this ancient church modelled on the original sepulchre in Jerusalem.
