HISTORY DAY – KETTERING PAST REMEMBERED
Saturday 12 October 2019
The annual Northamptonshire Heritage Forum History Day was held last year in Kettering when the Friends of Kettering Art Gallery & Museum with Kettering Civic Society joined the Forum to present a very well attended programme of talks
in the Corn Market Hall. Four walking tours were arranged for the afternoon to significant places in the town.
steve sharpe, a hands-on local archaeologist, opened the day with his talk on Anglo-saxon and Roman pottery finds in the area. David Brown, the current Chairman of the Friends of Kettering Art gallery & Museum, followed next with a detailed account of the history of Kettering from earliest times to the present day. After coffee, Ian Luck, Chairman of Kettering & District Art society, talked about the artistic heritage of the town and showed beautiful photos of the works of a large number of Kettering artists whose works are on display in the town. the final speaker was tracey Clarke, the Community Link Manager at Wicksteed Park. she explained the history of the Park and spoke about recent changes and improved facilities.
After lunch, delegates were invited to join one of four walking tours to learn more about the town. Andrea Pettingale was the guide to look at the buildings of the south town; Delia thomas led the north town walk emphasising the religious and shoe making sites; some chose to visit the 800 year old Parish Church and Kettering Museum & Art gallery, (see photographs on back cover) while others followed guides David Brown, Ian Luck and Phil steele for a tour of the London Road Cemetery.
Many thanks to all those who organised such an interesting day and to those in charge of the catering who kept us well supplied with refreshments all day.
