Cycling Association obviously opened their competitions to outside clubs, as the two medals awarded to D Jordan in 1957 (gilt) and 1956 (bronze) from the st neots & District cycle club demonstrate.
Internet searches of newspaper articles before 1920 only yielded one direct reference to awarding a cycling prize medal. It was reported in the Peterborough Advertiser 12 August 1911 p 7, that the thrapston & District Cycle Club would be holding a race and that the 1st prize was a cup and gold medal. It did seem that not many cycling clubs awarded prize medals. the author then visited an acquaintance of his who had been cycling for over 50 years, for the A5 Rangers Cycle Club, established in 1948, and asked him if he had won any medals. He had a wall of rosettes, some cups and shields and many pieces of glassware, plaques etc, but laughingly replied, that the only medal he could think of, was the one he had won the previous week, (november 2018) in a veteran’s cycle race run by a London club.
