JANUARY
January is a new year and a fresh start. Time to plan ahead. The weather can be so variable that you must be prepared to plan any gardening work around it. The soil
is still cold and could also be sodden from winter rains, frozen or covered in snow. It is best to keep off it until next month.
Take advantage of this opportunity to look around the plot and see what other essential but non-gardening jobs need doing. Top of the list has to be tools and equipment. Is it
all in working order, does anything need to be repaired or replaced?
It won’t be too long before the first early seeds such as lettuce, broad beans and beetroot can be started off in seed trays and small pots. January is the last opportunity to place your seed and seed potato orders.
Start to tidy up any hedges or overgrown areas around the plot before the birds begin looking for sites to build their nests. Avoid disturbing leaf stacks and compost heaps at this time of the year though because they could be providing shelter to hedgehogs and slow-worms for the winter.
Jobs for the month
Top of the list is to get the seed potato order sent off as soon as possible or look out for a local ‘Potato Day’ event.
Sow
Sow a few modules of hardy peas such as ‘Douce Provence’ or ‘Little Marvel’ to plant out under protection next month. Try a few cell trays of round seeded carrots to transplant into the greenhouse border.
Harvest
Leeks, parsnips, salsify, leaf beet, endive, kale, savoy cabbage and sprouts from the open ground. Use onions, shallots, garlic, potatoes, carrots, celeriac and beetroot from store.
General
Buy fresh bags of seed and potting compost and store them in a shed or garage to protect them from any snow, rain or frost. Leave them there for a couple of weeks to warm up before using them.
Regularly check over produce in store looking for any that have become soft, diseased or may be showing signs of re-growing. Remove and destroy any that you find. Start to clean pots, trays and labels. Spread old seed and potting compost left over from 2014 on the soil.
Pests and diseases
The same as December.
