On Monday 19th December, six OCdts from Falklands Company travelled to the home of military sailing, the Joint Services Adven-
turous Sail Training Centre in Go sport, to embark on a self-organised AT Expedition in the Solent. Despite initially having reservations about the weather after the freezing temperatures of the preceding Sovereign’s Week, the sky was clear, and the sun was shining. The crew composed of four novices, for whom this was their first taste of sailing, with a mate and skipper being OCdts who had gained instructor qualifications while at RMAS.
All throughout the week, our crew was blessed with almost tropical sunshine, which made the instructional periods all the more enjoyable, with the crew rapidly learning new skills and stretch- ing their abilities. The itinerary for the week had the boat spending nights alternating between the Isle of Wight and mainland England to allow for longer passages to build miles and give plenty of time to get to grips with the boat.
With short days due to the season, the evenings were utilised for shore-based teaching such as passage planning, point of sail theory and chart- work. The exped utilised the funding from the Sandhurst Trust to fund the purchase of teach- ing aids and logbooks, for which we are most grateful for the support they gave.
On completion of the week, all the novice crew had built a newfound interest in sailing and a wish to continue with further sailing, and the experienced crew had developed their instruc- tional ability and built essential miles for pro- gressing through the scheme.
